Between history and legend ...

“Il Portone Rosso” Rosso is an ancient stable inn, built in the XVIII century and, according to the legend, on 1800 was run by a very shady-looking and greedy for money innkeeper.
One day, an abbey came to the inn, asking for refuge and hospitality. He was fleeing from the State of the Church, having stolen some gold. He didn’t want to be punished by the Church, but he did want to atone for his fault. Thus, he asked the innkeeper to remain in the guesthouse forever, offering the fruit of his robbery as a permanent income. The host accepted and give the clergyman a quiet room, where he spent the rest of his life completely alone, studying, writing theological treaties and praying the Lord to be forgiven.

At his death, the innkeeper, fearing the Church to come and demand the remains of the gold, didn’t tell a soul that the abbey died.
Then he buried his corpse in the well, and kept the gold.

That’s what the legend tells, handed down by the old people that lives there. Then, the story also reports that in the 70’s a rich and noble family from Como, who still holds the building, bought the inn, uninhabited since fifty years. During the restructuring works, in a previously closed niche, a key, an old balance for gold and three manuscripts were found. The manuscripts were written and signed by the cleric, in 1.832.

They are still property of the Countess Mauri, who keeps on making dreams come true.
